Abstract

Objective: To describe nursing care in the management of central venous catheters. Methods: This is an integrative literature review conducted using the Lilacs, BDEnf, and Medline databases; with the descriptors invasive hemodynamic monitoring, catheters, and nursing care. Texts available in full in English, Spanish, and Portuguese that addressed nursing practice or care related to central venous catheters – published between 2020 and 2025 – were selected. Results: The main nursing care practices for central venous catheters were: hand hygiene, proper dressing changes and maintenance, preservation of device patency, rigorous disinfection of lines and connectors, daily assessment of the insertion site, and adoption of complementary strategies (daily bathing with chlorhexidine, safe patient mobilization, and guided home care). The importance of the professionals' knowledge and skills was observed, as catheter care is generally routine, with gaps that impact patient safety. Conclusion: Nursing care for central catheters is multifactorial and depends on practices, techniques, knowledge, organization, and adherence to care protocols. Thus, gaps in knowledge and skills directly impact patient safety and quality of care.
