Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the nursing staff's knowledge of care for neonates with cleft lip and/or palate. Methods: Quantitative, descriptive, and exploratory research. Nurses and nursing technicians working in neonatal and pediatric care units of a public teaching hospital in Paraná state were included in the study. Data collection was carried out using a structured questionnaire between July and October 2024. The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee. Results: There was a predominance of young adult professionals (mean age 40.1 years), female (98.4%), and with a technical level (61.3%). Most reported having experience in the care of patients with clefts (91.9%) but were unaware of the classification of the different types of clefts (n=56; 90.3%). More than half of the respondents assessed that they had basic knowledge regarding the care provided to these patients (53.2%) and expressed interest in deepening their knowledge of the subject (96.8%). Among the seven variables investigated, six showed a higher frequency of incorrect answers. Conclusion: The results highlighted the need to expand training programs to address the identified knowledge gaps and promote quality of care, as well as to develop specific care protocols for the care of newborns with cleft lip and/or palate.
