Abstract
The main objective of this study was to assess adherence to hand hygiene (HH) among the multidisciplinary health team in the Intensive Care Units (ICU) of a reference hospital for patients with infectious diseases in the Brazilian Amazon. This was a retrospective analytical study with a quantitative aspect based on secondary information obtained from the hand hygiene observation forms filed in the database of the Hospital Infection Control Commission (CCIH). The results obtained showed that during the statistical comparison of hand hygiene adherence of the five moments between the multiprofessional team of the two Intensive Care Units for adults and pediatrics, the average adherence in the adult ICU was 30.76% and in the ICU 28.92% for pediatricians. The conclusion is reached that measures should be developed aiming at the greater use of this basic hospital infection prevention routine by the multiprofessional health team. Hand hygiene, as recommended, is the first step towards the search for safety and excellence in the quality of patient care.
