Abstract
Objective: To investigate the techniques of collection of arterial blood gases (AG) in the literature, based on the technical and theoretical knowledge of nurses and identify the importance of interpretation of AG by this professional in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Methods: This is a comprehensive review to search the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature (LILACS) and Google Scholar. The inclusion criteria were articles published between 2016 and 2020 in Portuguese, scientific articles and full text. Results: The analysis of the articles made it possible to identify the main conducts of nurses in arterial blood collection for the performance of AG and the relevance of their participation in the interpretation of this test, ensuring an efficient therapeutic treatment for the patient in the ICU. Final considerations: Arterial blood gas is a biochemical test that analyzes arterial blood gases, with the nurse being responsible for collecting the blood sample, as well as being an important agent in interpreting the test data following scientific standards
