Abstract
Objective: To assess the importance of the kangaroo method for the development of premature and/or low birth weight newborns, identifying the benefits that the kangaroo method provides. Methods: This is an integrative review research, based on scientific articles from the search on the virtual platforms BVS and PubMed, obtaining a total of 9 final articles. The research started with the elaboration of a guiding question, through the use of the PICO strategy: “Does the use of the Kangaroo Method in skin-to-skin contact with the parents become effective for the development of the newborn?”. Results: The performance of the kangaroo method has benefits in breastfeeding, homeostasis and creation of an affective bond for the newborn, although there are differences in the literature. However, the method proves to be a valuable strategy in reducing readmission rates, which is an important factor in reducing morbidity and mortality. Final considerations: The accomplishment of this study demonstrated the positive impacts that the kangaroo method provides not only to the newborn, but also to the parents. Skin-to-skin contact helps with homeostasis, a higher rate of breastfeeding, a decrease in readmission cases, generates tranquility in the newborn and helps to promote an affective bond.
