Abstract

Objective: To present the importance of vaccination as a means of promoting and preventing diseases, and that non-adherence to vaccination can become a public health problem. Methods: The study carried out an integrative review of the last 5 years. The following were used as a base: Scientific Electronic Library Online SciELO, Acervo+ Index Base, Medline via PubMed portal of the National Library of Medicine, Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS) and Cochrane Library. The selected Health Sciences (DeCS)/Medical Subject Heading (MeSH) descriptors were used with Boolean operators: “AND” and “OR”. Results: The fundamental role of Primary Health Care (ABS) was verified through health professionals as a means of conveying knowledge to the population, being a teaching-learning process that promotes interaction, bond between professional and patient, thus reducing fears and community aspirations and promoting a higher rate of adherence to immunization and vaccination coverage. Final considerations: Although vaccination is the most efficient method to combat infectious and contagious diseases, there is still hesitation in carrying out the vaccination schedule. However, health professionals have a fundamental role in bringing effective information to the population and carrying out immunization strategies to increase vaccination coverage.
