Abstract

Objective: To understand the perception of women diagnosed with depression and/or anxiety regarding the factors that contributed to these diagnoses. Methods: This is a qualitative research conducted with ten women residing in the rural area of a small municipality in the northwest region of the State of Rio Grande do Sul. The inclusion criteria used were:women over 18 years of age, residing in rural areas, and using medication for depression and/or anxiety. The collected data were analyzed using thematic analysis technique. Results: The factors associated with the occurrence of depression and anxiety are related to work overload and responsibility towards the illness of a family member, alcoholism problems of the husband/partner, and the veiled situations of violence experienced in the family context. Conclusion: Identifying the factors associated with depression and anxiety in women living in rural contexts is important for nursing, as it contributes to the development of health strategies that can assist in the prevention and treatment of these disorders.
