Abstract

Objectives: To analyze nursing teachers' understanding of transsexuality in the teaching and learning process in nursing. Methods: This is a descriptive, reflective study, with a qualitative approach, carried out with 12 teachers from a higher education institution in the highlands of Paraíba, northeastern Brazil. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews, analyzed using the Collective Subject Discourse technique. Results: The lecturers recognize the importance of including the theme of transsexuality in the nursing curriculum and stress the need for continuing training for professionals. They highlight mental health as a priority for the trans population and the importance of creating safe, prejudice-free care environments. The lecturers also point out that the prejudice of health professionals themselves is a significant barrier, which means that many trans people only seek care in extreme situations. Conclusion: Teachers understanding of care for transgender people is essential for integrating this theme into the nursing curriculum. Such an approach will contribute to training nurses who are more competent and sensitive to the real needs of this population, promoting qualified and holistic care.
