Depression and anxiety in medical students: a narrative review

Abstract

Objective: To observe the prevalence of depression and anxiety in medical students, as well as their triggering factors and possible consequences. Bibliographic review: It was possible to observe that researches are carried out around the world which seek to analyze the presence of symptoms of anxiety and depression among students of all years of medical graduation, estimating that 15 to 25% of these students will present some psychological disorder during their training, notably depression and anxiety. In addition, the possible causes of these psychological disorders, one can highlight the poor quality of sleep, religiosity and interpersonal relationships. Finally, it is important to mention the demand for medical care and adherence to treatment by these affected students. Final considerations: The study showed, in general, high levels of depression and anxiety in medical students around the world, with religion and gender being variables that are presumed to influence the mental health of these students, as well as sleep and sedentary lifestyle.
