Pathophysiology and treatment of rheumatoid arthritis: a narrative review
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objective: To review in a didactic way the pathophysiology and treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). Bibliographic review: RA is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease that presents as a symmetrical polyarthritis. They have a worldwide and Brazilian prevalence of approximately 1%. The pathophysiology of RA is linked to the presence of a specific arthritogenic antigen that activates T lymphocytes, which together with the inflammatory cytokines released, cause the disease. The diagnosis of RA is made through the clinic with the help of criteria created by the American College of Rheumatology. Rheumatoid Factor (RF) and Anti-citrullinated Peptide Antibody (anti-CCP) are of great importance in the diagnosis of RA. The first line of treatment for RA is Disease-modifying Antirheumatic Drugs (DMARDs) alone or together with Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs), analgesics and/or glucocorticoids. Final considerations: RA is a pathology with a complex pathophysiology. Its rapid diagnosis is necessary for the best treatment for the patient.
