Abstract

Objective: To analyze the characteristics of Fibromyalgia (FM). Bibliographic review: FM is defined as chronic, generalized, non-degenerative pain, persisting for more than 3 months, without any obvious organic damage and is commonly accompanied by additional symptoms such as joint stiffness, fatigue, sleep disturbances, cognitive dysfunction and depression. The prevalence of FM is between 2-8% of the population, being the third most common rheumatic disease. The proportion of female and male fibromyalgia patients is reported as 9:1 and the most common age group is individuals between 30 and 35 years old. The drugs Duloxetine, Milnacipran, and Pregabalin are approved for treatment. Final considerations: FM is a complicated syndrome characterized by chronic pain, joint stiffness, fatigue, sleep disruption, brain dysfunction, and depression, with great impairment of patients' quality of life and economic burden on the health care system. Its pathogenesis is not well known, and its diagnosis is only clinical. Treatment is with antidepressants and anticonvulsants, in addition to non-pharmacological therapies such as physical activity.
