Hearing loss and cochlear implant
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objective: To analyze the characteristics of the Cochlear Implant (CI), its functioning, its indications and complications. Bibliographic review: More than 500 million people worldwide suffer from hearing loss, which can compromise communication by causing damage to the development of cognitive, emotional, educational, socioeconomic skills, in addition to negatively influencing the individual's family dynamics . In this sense, the CI has been the technology that generates expectations and brings benefits to individuals with severe and/or profound sensorineural hearing loss who do not benefit from other hearing aids. ICs bypass the inner ear's natural transducer mechanism and deliver electrical stimulation directly to auditory neurons. For individuals with severe to profound hearing loss, especially bilateral, the best therapy is a cochlear implant. Final considerations: Early and accurate diagnosis is crucial for successful auditory rehabilitation of high-grade hearing loss. Hearing rehabilitation with cochlear implants is associated with significant improvement, not only in hearing and understanding of spoken language, but also in quality of life in any age group.
