Homicides: epidemiological profile of victims and characterization of injuries

Abstract
Objective: To determine the prevalence of homicides in the center west of Minas Gerais, the epidemiological profile of the victims and to determine the nature of the injuries. Methods: The study was quantitative, descriptive and retrospective of death reports registered at the Forensis Medical Institute of the Civil Police of Minas Gerais in Divinópolis/MG from 2017 to 2019. Results: 98 homicide reports were analyzed. February was the month with the highest number of homicides, followed by May and June. The number of male victims was higher (77.42%) than female victims (22.58%). The age group with the highest number of homicides was between 21 and 30 years old (20.43%). Most of the victims were brown (46.24%). Bullet wound were more frequently observed (64.52%), followed by stab wound. Majority were killed by gunshot (64.62%), had more than one affected body segment (61.29%). Traumatic brain injury was the main cause of death (35.71%). Deaths produced with the use of poison, fire, explosives, suffocation, torture, insidious or cruel means was negative in 51.61% of homicides. Conclusion: The study concludes that majority of homicides occurred in young men and firearm injury is the most prevalent cause of death.
