The risk of drug interactions as a subsidy for the prescription and rational use of drugs
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objective: Approach the scientific production about the risks of drug interactions, as a subsidy for the prescription and rational use of drugs. Methods: This is an integrative literature review. Data collection was performed using the National Library of Medicine (PubMed), Scientic Electronic Library Online (Scielo) and Virtual Health Library (VHL) databases, with a time frame from 2016 to 2022. Results: Polypharmacy is the main cause of drug-drug interactions, which can result in relevant injuries. In addition to incorrect prescriptions and without guidance to patients, the indiscriminate use driven by the practice of self-medication, further increase the risk of conditions ranging from decreased pharmacological efficacy to toxicity. Among the pharmacological classes with the greatest potential for interaction, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, psychotropic agents, antimicrobials, anticoagulants and antiplatelet agents stand out, providing risk to the liver and kidneys, to the nervous and cardiovascular systems. Final considerations: The prescription and consumption of multiple medications, associated with lack of guidance, substantially increase the risks of cumulative toxicity as well as drug interactions and adverse reactions, thus causing undesirable and harmful effects. Health professionals are responsible for the correct prescription, ensuring the necessary information to avoid the misuse of drugs.
