Abstract
Objective: To analyze the characteristics of Tourette's Syndrome (TS). Bibliographic review: TS is defined by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) by the presence of motor and phonic tics before 18 years of age and persisting for a period longer than 12 months without a secondary cause. It is more common in men than in women (3:1), with a reported prevalence ranging from 0.3 to 1% in the general population. Motor tics are sudden, rapid, recurrent, non-rhythmic, stereotyped motor movements, usually preceded by an impulse. Vocal tics include any tic that produces noise: sniffing, grunting, humming, clicking, screaming words over and over again. Final considerations: TS is a neurodevelopmental disorder in which patients present tics for a period longer than one year, being a condition associated with several comorbidities such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety disorder, or oppositional defiant disorder. In this context, it is a disease that directly affects the patient's quality of life. Its treatment, first, with education about the disease and its clinical course, in addition to psychotherapy and drugs such as haloperidol, pimozide and aripiprazole.
