Androgenic anabolic steroids and their side effects

Abstract

Objective: To describe the side effects in the use of anabolic androgenic steroids in adults. Methods: Integrative literature review, in databases held at the National Library of Medicine (PubMed), Virtual Health Library (BVS) and Scientific Electronic Library Online (Scielo). The search was conducted in October 2022. The descriptors in Health Sciences (DeCS) were: anabolic androgenic steroids, anabolic steroids, risks, harms, adverse effects, adults and their correspondents in English, with combinations of the Boolean operators AND and OR. The inclusion criteria were: publications in Portuguese and English, original studies, freely accessible, available in full and published between 2017 and 2022. Results: After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 18 studies were selected. The main findings were: impairment of the central nervous system, cognitive and behavioral changes, reduction in the density of neurons in the base and hippocampus, hypertension, heart and kidney failure, hepatotoxicity and endocrine changes - masculinizing effects in women. Final considerations: Through the categories listed in the study, it was possible to highlight several changes that can compromise body physiology in adults. We emphasize the importance of raising awareness among health professionals and the general population (mainly bodybuilders) regarding health risks and their toxicity.
