Impact of cognitive-behavioral therapy on the management of chronic insomnia
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objective: To investigate the effects of cognitive-behavioral therapy in the management of chronic insomnia, focusing on improving sleep quality and reducing associated symptoms. Methods: This is an integrative literature review conducted through searches in the PubMED, CAPES and BVS databases, using the descriptors “Cognitive Behavioral Therapy”, “Health Impact” and “Chronic Insomnia”, together with the Boolean operator “AND”. Nineteen articles that met the research objective were selected. Results: Chronic insomnia affects a large part of the population, compromising quality of life and mental health. Cognitive-behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) has stood out as an effective non-pharmacological alternative, reducing symptoms and improving sleep, and its digital versions have been studied as viable alternatives, offering promising results. Studies have shown a reduction of up to 50% in the severity of insomnia, improvements in sleep quality and decreased use of medications. CBT-I is effective but faces challenges of access and shortage of therapists. Final considerations: The review demonstrated the effectiveness of CBT-I in the treatment of chronic insomnia, outperforming pharmacological approaches, and highlighted strategies such as cultural adaptation and digital platforms to amplify its impact.
