Abstract

Objective: To review the literature about female sexual dysfunction, demonstrating the difficulty in its approach in medical practice and consequently of its treatment. Methods: This is an integrative literary review of 15 articles from the SciELO, PubMed and LILACS databases published between 2010 and 2021, selected after the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: Sexuality is a very stigmatized topic in society, reflecting on female resistance to seeking medical help, whether out of frustration, shame or bad experiences from past appointments. Thus, in cases of Female Sexual Pain (FSP), medical negligence and poor approaches to the subject are common, which may justify or underdiagnose this disorder. Final considerations: It is evident that there is a need to improve the professional approach to FSPs and the importance of a multidisciplinary action, involving gynecologists, physiotherapists and sexologists, in order to reduce the time between the perception of the condition and the start of treatment.
