Abstract

Objective: To analyze the characteristics of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Bibliographic review: PTSD is a psychological illness that can arise after a person experiences one or more traumatic events, such as military combat, physical trauma due to injury, or other accidents, such as domestic violence, rape, childhood trauma, neglect, or abuse. This manifests with dramatic symptoms of hyperarousal, intrusive memory memories, nightmares, and somatosensory flashbacks. It is often accompanied by psychiatric comorbidities such as depression, substance abuse, or anxiety disorders, which leads to a high level of functional disability. Final considerations: PTSD consists of the development of symptoms related to a stressor after one or more traumatic events. Its symptoms are generally classified into three groups: intrusion, avoidance, and arousal with predominant effects on sleep with insomnia and nightmares. Pharmacological treatment is done with Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors or Selective Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors, whose side effects are well tolerated. In this sense, an early diagnosis and multidisciplinary treatment with a psychiatrist and a psychologist are essential in order to minimize the impacts of the disorder.
