Abstract
Objective: To review studies that address the diagnosis and treatment of penile fracture and objectively describe its main consequences, including the most frequent complications in the face of late or non-surgical intervention. Bibliographic review: Penile fracture is defined as the rupture of the tunica albuginea of the corpora cavernosa and its main trauma mechanism is traumatic sexual intercourse, usually due to the compression of the erect penis on the perineum or the pubic symphysis of the woman. However, there are other varied trauma mechanisms. The diagnosis of penile fracture, for the most part, is primarily clinical, through anamnesis and adequate physical examination. The current treatment of choice is the immediate surgical approach. Advanced age and the extent of rupture in the tunica albuginea may be associated with the development of erectile dysfunction, as well as the interval between trauma and surgical treatment are also related to the results, that is, the faster the surgical approach is initiated, the lower the postoperative complications such as erectile dysfunction and penile curvature. Final considerations: The early approach, with the identification and prompt intervention of the lesion, is associated with lower chances of progression to erectile dysfunction and other complications associated with penile fracture.
