Abstract

Objective: To analyze the characteristics of Glaucoma. Bibliographic review: Glaucoma is a group of diseases whose common feature is the progressive degeneration of the optic nerve, with loss of retinal ganglion cells, thinning of the retinal nerve fiber layer and increased cupping of the optic disc. Visual symptoms are often a late feature of glaucoma, when the disease is very advanced. Among the many types of glaucoma, the most common are primary open-angle (POAG) and closed-angle (GPAF) glaucoma. It is estimated that 4.5 million or more than 12% of all cases of blindness worldwide are the result of glaucoma. Final considerations: Glaucoma is a disease that leads to reduced visual acuity and, consequently, a decline in patients' quality of life. Although glaucoma usually progresses slowly, it is the most common cause of irreversible preventable blindness in the world. Thus, it is essential to raise awareness about the disease in order to provide the earliest possible diagnosis with appropriate treatment instituted by the ophthalmologist in order to prevent the progression of glaucoma.
