Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the effects of the main drugs used in the treatment of tuberculosis, as well as their relationship with the development of liver injury in patients who use these drugs in combination, in addition to evaluating the effectiveness of chemopreventive strategies. Methods: This is a integrative review that analyzed scientific productions from the National Library of Medicine (PubMed) and Virtual Health Library (BVS) databases. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied for the analysis of results and discussion. Results: Antituberculosis drugs, mainly Rifampicin, Isoniazid and Pyrazinamide, have important hepatotoxic potential that have a harmful laboratory and clinical character and therefore increase the dropout rate of tuberculosis treatment, however, hepatoprotective drugs are already relevant to be used in therapy complementary to antituberculous drugs as they help in the reduction of symptoms and complications, reducing the dropout rate and improving patients' quality of life. Final considerations: There is a clear need to add drugs to the RHZE regimen that are hepatoprotective, mainly bicyclol, silymarin and N-acetylcysteine.
