Abstract

Objective: To describe the significance of the red reflex test for the early diagnosis of retinoblastoma. Methods: Bibliographic review, carried out in stages: choice of subject; elaboration of the guiding hypothesis using the PICO strategy (with the population sample of the study and mediations in the population analyzed); definition of descriptors; search for studies carried out; choice, analysis and synthesis of results. Searching the databases: Virtual Health Library (VHL), PubMed, Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), Embase and Cochrane. Results: Retinoblastoma is a malignant neoplasm with a high probability of leading to death and irreversible consequences when diagnosed late. It was possible to observe that 81.8% (n=18) of the articles addressed the topic on the early detection and treatment of retinoblastoma, already at 9.0 % (n=2) newborn screening and its benefits were analyzed. In 4.5% (n=1) the prevalence of blindness and loss of the eyeball due to retinoblastoma was investigated, while in another 4.5% (n=1) the consequences were caused by eye cancer. Final considerations: It is considered important to use the red reflex test for the diagnosis in the early stage of retinoblastoma, generating a greater probability of effective recovery, with a minimum of subsequent interventions.
