Abstract

Objective: To discuss and review the general aspects inherent to Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC). Bibliographic review: SCC is the second most common non-melanoma skin cancer and the main risk factors are exposure to ultraviolet radiation, fair skin, immunosuppression and age. Suspicion begins with the interpretation of clinical information, such as the patient's history, anatomical location, morphology, and appearance. The subtypes are in situ SCC, keratoacanthoma and invasive SCC. There is still no universally accepted staging system for CEC. The first-line treatment is surgical excision, with Mohs micrographic surgery being the most efficient and with high cure rates. However, in advanced cases, it is common to use other adjuvant therapies. Final considerations: Due to its increasing incidence, SCC has been gaining great attention in clinical practice. However, there are still difficulties in establishing a universal staging, as well as understanding its prognosis. Therefore, further studies are needed to establish a universally accepted staging and curative treatment for all types of SCC.
