Abstract

Objective: To analyze the characteristics of Anorexia Nervosa (AN) and Bulimia Nervosa (BN). Bibliographic review: BN is characterized by episodes of compulsive eating associated with a feeling of lack of control overeating during the episode. These episodes are typically followed by guilt and shame, which trigger compensatory behaviors to avoid weight gain. AN is distinguished as a condition of self-starvation, in which people are underweight and engage in behaviors to prevent weight gain. These disorders are related to a series of sociocultural parameters, family factors, negative affect, low self-esteem and body dissatisfaction. Final considerations: Anorexia nervosa and bulimia are the main eating disorders, in which female individuals are most affected. Both disorders have a high impairment, affecting a person's social, psychological and occupational functioning in such a way that their impact can persist well beyond the disorder itself. The first-line treatment for both conditions is cognitive-behavioral therapy, in addition, for bulimia there is a pharmacological option, fluoxetine.
