Abstract
Objective: To review available evidence on approaches to aortic stenosis, including transcatheter aortic valve replacement and minimally invasive aortic valve surgery. Methods: This is an integrative review study. The databases used were PubMed and VHL. The search for articles was carried out considering the descriptors “Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement”, “Aortic Valve Stenosis” and “Cardiovascular Surgical Procedures”, using the Boolean operator “AND”. Articles published between 2022-2023 were included; in English; free access; clinical study, clinical trial, observational study and controlled clinical trial. Results: Of the articles analyzed, twenty addressed the benefits and positive results of TAVR. These studies highlighted reduced mortality rates, good short- and long-term outcomes, and TAVR as a cost-effective option. On the other hand, nine articles discussed the complications and challenges associated with TAVI. Problems such as prosthesis-patient mismatch, conduction abnormalities, acute kidney injury and coagulation disorders. Furthermore, three articles reported a significant benefit when using conventional surgery in obese patients and patients with left ventricular dysfunction. Final considerations: TAVR is safe and effective, with a low mortality rate. On the other hand, MIARV aims to preserve and repair the native valve, offering a lower risk of complications.
