Abstract
Objective: To discuss the use of semaglutide in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2), analyzing the benefit of its therapeutic adherence. Literature review: The high incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) highlights the need for the development of various therapies, such as semaglutide, for the appropriate clinical management of these patients. The development of DM2 leads to metabolic dysfunction, microvascular, and macrovascular complications. In this context, the use of semaglutide (either orally or subcutaneously), an incretin mimetic compound with 94% similarity to the hormone GLP-1, is highlighted. Through clinical trials conducted by various studies, this drug has shown promising results, leading to an average decrease of 0.9% in HbA1c, an average weight loss of 4.3 kg, in addition to presenting a low risk of hypoglycemia and assisting in the management of body weight. Final considerations: Given the risks of complications associated with DM2 and its progressive population incidence, knowledge about the use of semaglutide as an alternative treatment for antihyperglycemics is extremely relevant.
