Abstract
Objective: To analyze the benefit and safety of using SGLT2 inhibitors in the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in non-diabetic patients. Literature review: Chronic kidney disease increases the risk of cardiovascular and renal events, in addition to reducing life expectancy and quality of life. The biggest cause of CKD in the world is type 2 diabetes mellitus, which is also treated with SGLT2 inhibitors. However, there is a portion of the population that has CKD due to non-diabetic causes that also benefit from the use of this class of medications. SGLT2 inhibitors exert a renoprotective mechanism, mediated by tubuloglomerular feedback through the reduction of proximal tubular sodium reabsorption with glomerular afferent arteriolar vasoconstriction, reversing intraglomerular hypertension. There is an initial drop in renal function after the use of SGLT2 inhibitors, which is reversed in the long term with continued use of these medications. Final considerations: SGLT2 inhibitors delay the progression of chronic kidney disease and safely reduce the risks of cardiovascular mortality and renal failure in patients with CKD with or without type 2 (DM).
