Abstract
Objective: To identify situations and pathologies that affect the interaction of intestinal microbiota and cognitive function and thus answer whether there are viable ways to benefit this relationship, or methods of preventing future outcomes of such diseases. Methods: A systematic search was conducted in the Regional Portal of the Virtual Health Library (VHL) and the National Library of Medicine (PubMed) databases, carried out between the years 2019 and 2024, whose descriptors were “Cognitive Functions”; “intestinal microbiome”, using the Boolean operator “AND”. Results: The final sample consisted of 25 articles, the majority of which showed positive results from foods used with the purpose of acting on the intestinal microbiome with an acceptable outcome in cognitive function, in addition to lifestyle changes in patients with pathologies that compromise the cognitive system. , it was also possible to highlight diseases that developed with cognitive decline and consequent damage to the composition of the intestinal microbiota. Final considerations: In the studies covered, the pathologies showed a relationship with intestinal changes, whether in permeability or in the quantity and species that make up the microbiota and it was also possible to determine types of food/probiotics, procedures and the practice of physical activity as viable factors for gut-brain axis interaction.
