Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the use of the Barcelona anastomosis technique, its risks and benefits, in order to avoid ostomies. Literature Review: Ostomies are surgical openings created in the abdomen to allow intestinal transit to continue to the external environment. It is necessary for the surgeon to correctly assess whether or not the use of ostomies is indicated and, when necessary, choose the most appropriate technique for the patient. Currently, ostomies still have a great psychological impact on the patient and prejudices on the part of society; these factors must be addressed prior to surgery and monitored by the healthcare team. From this perspective, the Barcelona anastomosis offers a lower risk of stenosis, fistula, and anastomotic dehiscence compared to ostomies. However, these patients must be selected carefully by professionals due to contraindications to the procedure. Final considerations: The Barcelona anastomosis, despite having a high risk of complications, appears to be an effective alternative, due to more effective healing and a lower risk of anastomotic strictures.
