Abstract
Objective: To analyze the effects of problematic internet use (PIU) on the mental health of children and adolescents. Methods: An integrative literature review was carried out using the following databases: PUBMED and BVS and the following descriptors: “Problematic Internet use” AND “Mental health” “Children” AND “Adolescents” NOT “COVID-19”. In the end, 19 articles were selected for the study with the help of the Rayyan platform. The inclusion criteria used were: articles published in the last 5 years, written in Portuguese, English and Spanish, published in scientific journals. Results: PIU is related to symptoms of low self-esteem, daily stress, low quality of life and sleep in children and adolescents. Final considerations: By analyzing the articles, it was possible to see the negative impacts of PIU on the lives of children and adolescents. Therefore, preventive measures should be taken both at home and in schools, so that PIU does not cause greater harm.
