Abstract
Objective: To analyze whether viscosupplementation is truly effective in treating symptoms of hip osteoarthritis. Methods: This is an integrative literature review, conducted through the analysis of original articles found in the PubMed Central (PMC), Virtual Health Library (VHL) and Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) databases using the combination of the descriptors: “Viscosupplementation,” “Osteoarthritis,” “Hyaluronic Acid,” and “Hip” with the boolean operator “AND.” Inclusion criteria included studies published in English, Portuguese, and Spanish in the past five years, with open access. Incomplete and duplicate studies were excluded. Results: The results of this review indicated that, overall, viscosupplementation with hyaluronic acid is indeed effective in treating symptoms caused by osteoarthritis, such as pain and joint function. Additionally, no adverse events or infections were reported. However, it is important to note that this type of treatment does not address the underlying cause of joint destruction, serving instead as symptomatic relief. Final considerations: Viscosupplementation has proven to be an effective and promising procedure for the treatment of osteoarthritis. Therefore, it is crucial for healthcare professionals to have mastery and continuous updates on this topic.
