Abstract

Objective: To describe the causes, prevention, and treatment of weight regain after bariatric surgery. It was observed that anatomical, behavioral, psychological, and social factors are directly related to this problem. Literature review: Obesity is a medical condition characterized by excessive accumulation of body fat, which can compromise health and significantly increase the risk of various diseases. Bariatric surgery emerges as an effective alternative for the treatment of obesity; however, as it is an invasive therapeutic process, many factors must be evaluated before its performance to prevent weight regain. Weight regain after bariatric surgery is a complex phenomenon involving multiple physiological, psychological, and social factors. Nevertheless, patients who experience weight regain have effective alternatives for prevention and treatment. Final considerations: Therefore, there is a set of social, physical, and psychological factors that must be considered so that post-surgical weight regain can be prevented and/or treated. These include adequate nutrition, regular physical exercise, and medical and psychological follow-up. Keywords: bariatric surgery; weight regain; obesity; prevention; treatment.
