Abstract
Objective: Identify strategies that can be used in primary care to reduce the rate of amputations in patients with diabetic foot. Methods: This is an integrative review, conducted in the PubMed database, using the health sciences descriptors (DeCS) “Diabetic foot,” “Amputations,” and “Primary health care.” Ten original studies published between 2020 and 2025 with full text available were selected. Results: Among the strategies identified, health education and self-care were highlighted, with an emphasis on foot care guidelines and educational actions. Early detection of risk factors, such as ischemia and infection, in ulcer assessments for correct treatment planning was also pointed out. They also mentioned that the work of multidisciplinary teams can optimize glycemic control and initiate revascularization, proving effective in reducing amputations. In addition, adequate clinical management, with structured assessments and effective referrals, enables better follow-up. Final considerations: Therefore, health education, self-care, early detection of risk factors, multidisciplinary teams, and proper clinical management are effective in reducing amputations in patients with diabetic foot. However, further studies are needed to adapt this approach to the reality of healthcare services.
