Abstract

Objective: To analyze the development of lung lesions as a consequence of the use of electronic cigarettes. Methods: This is an integrative review. The databases used are the National Library of Medicine, Virtual Health Library and Directory of Open Access Journals. The search for articles was done through descriptors, namely “vaping”, “lung injuries” and “electronic nicotine delivery systems”. The review was carried out following the following steps: establishment of the theme; definition of eligibility parameters; definition of inclusion and exclusion criteria; verification of publications in databases; examination of the information found; analysis of the studies found and exposition of the results. Results: E-cigarette users are mostly young men aged between 18 and 34 years. It can be observed, in users who associate tetrahydrocarbinol (THC) with electronic cigarettes, the probability of complications and hospital admissions increased. The imaging tests showed abnormal findings in all studies analyzed in this literature review, most of which were diffuse bilateral opacities on chest radiographs. Final considerations: In view of the articles analyzed, it is considered that electronic cigarettes are not a safe alternative to smoking and that the pathophysiology of the disease behind their use needs to be better clarified.
