Abstract

Objective: To elucidate the effectiveness of melatonin in preventing delirium in hospitalized adult patients. Methods: This is a study with a qualitative approach, through an integrative literature review, in which the databases used were: PubMed, Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) and Cochrane Library (CL). The descriptors chosen, intermediated by the Boolean operator “AND”, to search for articles on the platforms were “melatonin”, “sleep” and “delirium”. Results: After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, 18 articles remained selectable. Of the articles analyzed, 12 did not find statistically significant results that justify the use of melatonin as a preventive therapy for delirium in hospitalized patients; 2 pointed to the ability to increase sleep quality. Final considerations: There is no established consensus on the benefits of melatonin in preventing delirium. Furthermore, there is not enough evidence to support its use. New studies must be conducted.
