Abstract

Objective: To emphasize the importance of early diagnosis and management of Abdominal Compartment Syndrome (ACS) in Intensive Care Units (ICU). Methods: Retrospective and cross-sectional study of integrative literature review with literature search in LILACS, SciELO, PubMed and SECAD-PROACI databases. Results: Intra-abdominal hypertension is defined as intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) ≥ 12 mmHg and ACS as IAP > 20 mmHg with or without abdominal perfusion pressure < 60 mmHg, associated with a new organ dysfunction whose management involves clinical and surgical measures. ACS leads to deterioration of respiratory, cardiovascular, renal, splanchnic and/or central nervous system function, its exact pathophysiology being unknown. Physical examination has only 50% accuracy to point out the elevation of IAP, indicating routine measurement of IAP on admission to the ICU and six hours after it, using a three-way urinary catheter. IAH is a corroborating factor for the increase in morbidity and mortality in critically ill patients. Final considerations: Due to its impact on patient recovery and ease of measurement, IAP monitoring should become a routine procedure in this sector.
