Abstract
Objective: To analyze the characteristics of Atopic Dermatitis (AD). Bibliography review: AD is the most prevalent chronic inflammatory skin condition worldwide with a relapsing character that repeatedly goes through the following stages: exacerbation and improvement. A family history of atopic disease, including asthma and allergic rhinitis, predisposes to the development of AD. Its pathophysiology comprises skin barrier dysfunction and immune dysregulation. The main symptom of AD is pruritus, which is associated with mental suffering and the development of depression and anxiety. Final considerations: AD is a disease associated with genetic and environmental factors, mainly characterized by pruritus and eczema that causes a decrease in patients' quality of life. Its therapy includes, in addition to the prevention of environmental factors, skin hydration, the use of topical corticosteroids and systemic medications in more severe cases. In this sense, a correct diagnosis and multidisciplinary treatment of these patients is essential, aiming not only at disease control and infection prevention, but also at psychological care in order to avoid the development of depressive and anxiety disorders.
