Abstract

Objective: To analyze the characteristics of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). Bibliographic review: RA affects about 0.5% and 1% of the world population, with a predominance of 3 times more in females than in males. The main symptoms of RA are pain, inflammation, swelling and stiffness of the synovial joints. However, the body-wide symptoms of this disease can include tiredness, high temperature, weight loss, and loss of appetite. RA has a strong genetic component, however there are environmental exposure factors such as exposure to tobacco smoke. Treatment can be performed with Metrotexate, which changes the natural history of the disease, in addition to non-steroidal and immunobiological anti-inflammatory drugs. Final considerations: RA is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects the joints, characterized by progressive symmetrical inflammation of the affected joints, resulting in cartilage destruction, bone erosion and functional disability. It can also be mentioned that there are extra-articular manifestations such as increased cardiovascular risk, kidney damage, gastrointestinal alterations and eye damage. In this sense, it is essential to understand the disease in order to provide an adequate diagnosis and treatment.
