Abstract

Objective: To verify the ability to recognize the signs and symptoms of Cerebral Vascular Accident (CVA) by users of the Unified Health System (SUS) in Juiz de Fora. Methods: A cross-sectional, observational study was conducted with a sample characterized by SUS users who attended a teaching hospital in Juiz de Fora-MG. 215 volunteers of both sexes were selected and shown a video of a stroke simulation, using the qAVC questionnaire to obtain the data. Results: The sample consisted of 65.12% female volunteers, predominantly with high school (37.21%), mostly without health insurance (71.63%). Asked about what happened in the simulation, 55.35% indicated that it was a stroke, with no difference between gender and correct answers (OR:1.0;CI95%:0.56-1.8;p>0 .05). There was statistical significance between those who had health plans and their correct answers (OR:2.1;CI95%:1.1-4.0;p=0.03), in addition to education and the ability to recognize the condition (p=0.006). 42.79% of respondents said they would call the Mobile Emergency Care Service, however, 8.37% identified “192” as the correct phone number. Conclusion: A significant portion of the sample is unaware of the signs and symptoms typically associated with stroke, lacking information about its management, in addition to ignoring the mechanisms for triggering emergency medical services.
