Abstract

Objective: To review the scientific literature on the use of Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) in bedside cardiovascular assessment. Bibliographic review: POCUS is a portable ultrasound device that has become popular in the emergency department, mainly for cardiac evaluation. Its use helps in the identification of cardiovascular alterations that, added to the anamnesis and physical examination, leads us to the main diagnoses in the emergency scenario, such as pericardial effusion, evaluation of the right ventricle (RV), cardiac arrest, aortic dissection, evaluation of the ejection fraction and shock. The proper performance of the exam by trained professionals and in the specific ultrasound windows ensures accuracy, optimization of diagnostic time and, thus, assisting in better decision-making and individualized conduct. The studies analyzed have shown that this technology is promising in cardiac assessment at the hospital. Final considerations: the studies showed that the cardiovascular POCUS helps in the diagnosis and management of the main cardiovascular diseases in the emergency scenario, optimizing the diagnostic time.
