Abstract

Objective: To analyze the characteristics of Kawasaki Disease (KD). Bibliographic review: KD is an acute febrile exanthematous pediatric disease, presenting mainly with lesions of systemic vasculitis. It has a worldwide distribution and is more common in Asian children. The diagnosis is purely clinical, as there are no adequately specific or sensitive tests available. The "classic" diagnosis involves five days of fever and four of the following five criteria: inflammation of the mucous membrane, rash, swelling of the hands and feet, bilateral conjunctivitis, and a solitary inflamed lymph node mass. Final considerations: Kawasaki disease is the most common medium vessel vasculitis in children. Its clinical course is divided into three phases: acute, subacute, convalescence. Single intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) at a dose of 2 g/kg body weight is the treatment of choice for KD, preferably on day 10, better if on day 7 of illness, but as soon as possible after diagnosis. If untreated, it is associated with the development of coronary artery aneurysms.
