Abstract
Objective: To report a rare case of reactional eosinophilia in a patient with childhood strongyloidiasis. Case Details: This is a follow-up of a 2-year-old female patient with a chief complaint of maculopapular rash on the lower limbs. The patient was clinically investigated during four medical consultations. Significant eosinophilia, in addition to leukocytosis, was found recurrently, via complete blood count, but without abnormality on ultrasound of the total abdomen. Subsequently, the patient developed a condition of persistent fever, as well as the presence of S. stercoralis larvae in the parasitological examination of the stool, making it possible to correlate the eosinophilic alteration with the verminosis. After prescribing Nitazoxanide and Albendazole (40 mg), orally, the patient improved, but with high leukocytosis and persistent eosinophilia, values that were later normalized. As an investigation, imaging tests were requested to investigate possible focus of infection or infiltration in the thorax and abdomen, which were also normal. Final considerations: The possible existence of reactional values of eosinophils secondary to the infectious parasite is noted, despite the rarity with which other syndromes related to eosinophilia occur in infants. Medical follow-up and periodic laboratory tests are necessary for constant eosinophilic evaluation.
