Abstract

Objective: To analyze the incidence of cholecystitis in diabetic patients, as well as its diagnosis and treatment. Bibliographic Review: Acute cholecystitis is an inflammatory pathological process of the gallbladder resulting from acute obstruction of the cystic duct. Furthermore, it presents itself as a surgical emergency that requires hospitalization for treatment. Among the risk factors for cholecystitis, Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is one of the main ones. After all, it is a metabolic syndrome of multiple origin, resulting from the lack of insulin's inability to adequately exert its effects, causing hyperglycemia. Currently, there are no widely accepted guidelines on the management of cholecystitis in diabetics, possibly due to the wide variability in clinical presentations and response to treatment by these patients. Therefore, the treatment of DM and cholecystitis are carried out independently, the latter being surgical and the clinical DM. Also, during the postoperative period, because they have chronic inflammation in the body, diabetic patients are more prone to infectious complications. Final considerations: Type 2 DM is an important risk factor for the occurrence of cholecystitis, since this metabolic syndrome causes numerous changes in metabolism, culminating in an overload of the gallbladder.
