Abstract
Objective: To analyze the characteristics of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Bibliographic review: AD is the most common cause of cognitive impairment or dementia in individuals over 65 years of age, with 47 million people living with the disease worldwide. This can be defined as a slowly progressive neurodegenerative disease characterized by neuritic plaques and neurofibrillary tangles as a result of accumulation of amyloid-beta peptide (Aβ) in the medial temporal lobe and neocortical structures. AD typically presents with prominent amnestic cognitive impairment and subsequent cognitive impairment. Final considerations: AD is a serious public health problem because it represents one of the main causes of death worldwide. Its diagnosis involves an interdisciplinary approach whose purpose is to evaluate the clinical signs and symptoms of this multifactorial disease and the biochemical alterations. The treatment of the disease involves non-pharmacological measures, in which the main one is physical activity and the current pharmacological treatment aims to delay the progression of the disease, but without a curative effect, consisting of cholinesterase inhibitors and memantine.
