Abstract
Objective: To identify the scientific literature that investigates and indicates the antioxidant and cytoprotective effects of Fridericia chica (Bonpl.) L.G.Lohmann, an Amazonian species popularly known as crajuru, cipó-cruz, and pariri and used in traditional medicine for the treatment of various human health conditions, such as infectious and inflammatory processes, gastrointestinal conditions, cancer, hypertension, and anemia. Literature review: 17 articles were found. The text of each found article was evaluated in full in order to select only the works of interest that analyzed the antioxidant potential of the species in question. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 7 articles were used for the literature review. Studies indicate that F. chica has antioxidant compounds and protects the cells of the organism. In addition, it can reduce the levels of transaminases, oxidative stress, and hematological toxicity. Final considerations: It can be stated that F. chica has compounds with antioxidant and cytoprotective properties and may be a potential source for the development of drugs with an impact on public health.
