Abstract
Objective: To analyze caregiver burden of patients with dementia. Bibliographic review: Dementia is a chronic and progressive syndrome characterized by memory, orientation, language and behavior problems. Caregivers of patients with dementia experience a reality called “caregiver overload”, which results from the process of caring for dementia and has implications for the quality of life of both people in the caregiver dyad. Final considerations: Most patients with dementia are cared for at home by informal caregivers. The inherent characteristics of the disease cause an overload on the caregiver, which can contribute to diseases that affect quality of life and the development of comorbidities such as depression. Thus, it is essential that there are public health policies aimed at the care and well-being of patients with dementia, being extended to their caregivers. Some actions promoting medical and psychological care, with the provision of information, can help to alleviate this burden. It is essential that health professionals are trained to support caregivers from the onset of the disease in order to offer comprehensive care to people with dementia and their informal caregivers.
