Abstract
Objective: Describe the scientific evidence available in the current literature regarding acute gestational appendicitis. Bibliographic review: Acute appendicitis is the most common cause of non-obstetric acute abdomen during pregnancy. Its occurrence is around 1:1500 pregnancies, and this incidence rate is analogous to the incidence in non-pregnant women of the same age. Symptoms are compatible with normal pregnancy, as well as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and mild leukocytosis. The diagnosis is essentially clinical and laparotomies for acute appendicitis during pregnancy occur in 25 to 50% of cases, compared to 15 to 35% in the non-pregnant population. However, late surgery is one of the main predictors of unfavorable outcome, such as fetal death occurring in 1.5 to 4% of uncomplicated cases and in 20 to 35% of cases of perforated appendix. Final considerations: In view of the above, it is extremely important to study and understand acute gestational appendicitis in order to promote ongoing education, disseminating information about early diagnosis and appropriate treatment, aiming to reduce risks and health problems for the mother-fetus binomial.
