Abstract
Objective: To present the management and how to avoid recurrence of abdominal and inguinal hernias. Bibliographic Review: Abdominal hernias are protrusions of viscera or organs that occur in weakened points of the aponeurosis, being characterized as transient or permanent, acquired or congenital. Inguinal hernias are caused by a weakening of the peritoneal and vaginal canal or Hasselbach's triangle. For both, there are multifactorial etiologies and these may recur depending on the characteristics of the patient and the treatment performed. Abdominal hernias generally recur more than inguinal hernias, especially in cases where the patient's own tissue is used to restore the weakened wall. The most frequent complication is chronic postoperative pain, which can lead to functional limitation and directly impact the patient's well-being. The treatment of recurrent hernia is surgical, observing the appropriate surgical technique and the use of synthetic polypropylene mesh both in open surgery and in videolaparoscopic surgery. Final considerations: Prevention is of paramount importance and must be carried out in all cases. Thus, pre-, intra-, and postoperative care seeks to minimize the risks of complications and relapses, providing patients with a better quality of life.
