Abstract

Objective: To report the case of a young patient with postoperative complications due to diabetes that progressed to brain death. Case details: This is the follow-up of a 25-year-old female patient, with multiple comorbidities, including congestive heart failure, type 1 diabetes mellitus, systemic arterial hypertension and chronic renal failure on dialysis, hospitalized due to complaints of fever, weight loss and asthenia. During hospitalization, several complications were observed, including infective endocarditis caused by Staphylococcus aureus, femoral artery pseudoaneurysm in the right lower limb, and subarachnoid and intraventricular hemorrhage. Despite treatment and intensive care, the patient did not show significant improvement and progressed to brain death. Final considerations: The patient presented with a complex hospital condition resulting from complications intrinsic to diabetes mellitus. Therefore, the importance of new studies, as well as ongoing education, of the entire professional team, regarding metabolic diseases and their problems can be noted.
